A Promotion Takes More than Hard Work

Promotions Take More than Hard WorkGetting nominated for a promotion is exciting. A higher position affirms hard work and encourages further acceleration. It is also a sign of recognition. In every field, professionals are promotion-minded for a variety of reasons.

When motivated by the lure of a promotion, some people display distinct behaviours that make them promising candidates. This is why today’s blog exposes three ways to go above and beyond the call of duty and raise the chances of earning a promotion.

When an individual speaks up, shows signs of self-motivation, and goes the extra mile, he or she has a better shot of getting a desirable position. These are bonus traits that should be in addition to positive work behaviours, like being social, upbeat, flexible, reliable, and keeping a clean workspace.

Once these tasks become daily routine, get a leg up on the competition; follow the tips below to secure an ideal promotion.

  •  “Go where the action is” – Don’t be afraid to get dirty. Be involved with major projects and go beyond areas of comfort to stretch abilities and get noticed by company leaders. Successful people are often in the middle of the action. And many times, these individuals got their careers started because they were in the right place at the right time. In many workplaces, the right place to be is where the most people are working the hardest.
  • Speak up- Ask questions and vocalize ideas. This puts unique creativity on display and shows investment in company growth, business goals, and teamwork. Employers need progressive people to be constantly innovating, and reinventing the workplace. Being that person is easy – just make sure others know it too.
  • Go the extra mile- Offering exceptional customer service, putting in extra effort on a task, and being an honest and genuine employee are, surprisingly, traits that most people fail display day to day. Still, employers hunger for people who are willing to go the extra mile and get a job done right, the first time.

This advice is not exclusive to people who have already been nominated for promotions; this is the behaviour promotion candidates have displayed through their entire employment. Therefore, heed this advice even if there is no promise of a promotion in sight right now.  After all, these are traits that can help an individual stand out from the crowd and become a valuable leader on any team. When opportunities knock, hard word precedes the promotion.
