Reach Your Career Goals in 2012 and Beyond

Pinnacle All, Career Tips Leave a Comment

The end of a year is a great time to reflect on your accomplishments, and set goals for the upcoming year. And while you may have had bad luck in the past setting and sticking to New Year’s resolutions, they can be a great way to set your career goals into motion.

Use New Year’s Resolutions to Jumpstart Your Career.

Effectively using resolutions can have a profound impact on whether your reach or surpass your career goals for the short- and long-term. Here are three tips to help you get the most out of your career resolutions:

  1. Designate a specific goal. Some common resolutions for people include “losing weight,” “being healthier” and “making more money.” But these resolutions are awfully vague. How do you know when you’ve accomplished your goal? For any personal or professional resolution, you should set a specific goal and timeline. When you have a concrete goal and timeline, you are much more likely to achieve your goals.
  2. Aim high…but not too high. Reaching for the stars can be a good thing, but be careful to set realistic goals. Going from a receptionist to vice president may not be attainable in one year, and by setting your goal too high, you’ll be less likely to accomplish it. Don’t shortchange yourself, but be sure to set goals that are attainable within the designated period.
  3. Set smaller goals along the way. A year is a long time, and setting a large-scale goal over the course of the year can seem daunting. While keeping the ultimate goal in your mind, focus instead on setting incremental goals that will help you achieve the big one. And set these incremental goals while you’re working on your initial resolution plan – you’re much more likely to be realistic and clear when your resolutions are fresh in your mind and you’re motivated.
