1996 seems very far away to most of Canada; however, for Manitobans, it feels like yesterday. Our beloved Jets left for…Phoenix. Hockey blasphemy! Those dark years are, thankfully, behind us, and as August comes to a close, we can focus on one thing:

Hockey is Back in Winnipeg!

Now that the Jets are back where they belong, Manitobans can again feel the excitement of a quest for the cup, and can rejoin our fellow Canadians in the celebration of NHL hockey.

Now that hockey is back, you might be considering a career in sports. The sporting career market is highly competitive; however, here are a few tips to help you break into the sporting employment market:

1. Be creative. Standing out in a competitive field of impressive candidates can be extremely difficult. To get your resume in front of the right people and stand out from the pack, you’ll need to get creative. Video resumes are gaining in popularity for many professionals and organizations. Instead of a boring cover letter, write a news release detailing your accomplishments. The trick is, you want to be different (in a good way)!
2. Start off somewhere. If you don’t have any experience in sports employment, aiming for the Jets initially is likely not going to land you a new job. Research local hockey clubs in your area, and either volunteer your services, or apply for employment (with larger clubs). Everyone has to start somewhere, and there is no shortage of hockey clubs and organizations in Canada!
3. Network. Use your network to reach out to sports professionals. Make connections and share your goal of landing a job in sports employment. Get involved in sports professional LinkedIn groups, follow sports professionals on Twitter – and then communicate with these professionals! Most professionals who are on social networks are there to meet other like-minded professionals. Make yourself part of the conversation, and demonstrate both your eagerness and your expertise.
