Are you determined to land a new job this year?

Successful job searches begin with research. Exploring the position and company you have your eye on is important. But it is equally important to research job market trends as well.

Do you know that right now the overall job market is somewhat depressed? Statistics Canada reports that “total employment gains in 2013 amounted to 102,000 – the slowest growth rate since 2009.” However, one economist is optimistic for the year ahead. Senior economist with TD Bank, Sonya Gulati says, “The underlying momentum will likely encourage employers to once again add to their payroll, albeit at a modest rate of roughly 10-15,000 positions per month.”

With new jobs added to the economy every month, there is hope that you will land a job. Increase your chances of getting hired soon. Learn about hiring seasons. Applying for the right job at the right time could help you land a job fast.

Hiring Seasons

Hiring trends often vary by season. A Monster.com article is quick to point out that some of the healthiest hiring statistics are seen after the holidays and at the end of summer. Scott Testa is chief operating officer of Mindbridge Software. He elaborates by saying, “The big months for hiring are January and February, and late September and October.”

But this doesn’t mean you should only apply for jobs in these months. Your job industry may have alternative peak hiring seasons. Use this list as a tool to understand how the job market fluctuates throughout the year:

January and February

The first quarter is a prime time to look for employment. Companies are strategically planning for the year ahead, which means they will need to hire talent to execute their plans.

April and May

At the dawn of spring, many industries are anticipating an increase in business. Landscaping and hospitality, for instance, are building momentum and need to ramp up their workforces quickly.

July and August

Not a lot of hiring occurs in the summer because company recruiters and staff members are taking vacations. However, for the applicant with unique and notable work experience, this can be the right time to make contact; an available recruiter may have extra time to review each application.

September and October

When summer is over and business resumes, companies are known to hire aggressively. This is because the strategies they began at the beginning of the year are well underway. They are aware of their needs and look to qualified job candidates to fulfil them.

November and December

Many people are not motivated to apply for jobs during the holiday season. But those who do join a small pool of available workers and have a high chance that their applications will be seen.

Getting hired for your dream job is not dependant on the time of year you apply. Rather, it solely relies on making your interest known. Apply today. And keep applying until you get the job you want and deserve.
