With 2013 freshly upon us, now is the opportune time to take a look back and reflect on your career. Taking the time to see where you’ve been so you can get where you’re going will set you up for a successful year ahead. Here are a few tips to get you on your way:

1. Take pride in your achievements.

Ensure you’re starting the new year right! Look back over the past year and congratulate yourself on your accomplishments. It’s okay to commend yourself for every success, no matter how great or small. Make sure to consider a variety of things – what awards or recognition have you received? What skills have you developed and honed? Have you received a promotion or any additional education or learning? Every success is worthy of a pat on the back. You’ve earned it!

2. Assess what behaviors brought you success.

Knowing what worked well in 2012 will aid to continued success in the New Year. What tools and resources did you find helpful in contributing to your success? What motivated and inspired you? What qualities might you possess that have assisted in a job well done? Perhaps an ability to communicate well with others and work effectively as part of a team has led you and others to professional victories. Take note of what has worked for you, and why it worked.

3. Assess what behaviors didn’t bring you success.

Not every situation may have turned out the way you had wanted – but don’t fret! Learn from your mistakes, and consider how you may approach similar situations differently in the future to obtain more desirable results.

4. Bring your best, and leave out all the rest.

Now that you’ve evaluated your strengths and opportunities and identified what did and didn’t work for you in the past, it’s time to move forward. Although it is important to understand why some things didn’t work out the way you had hoped, there’s no need to mull over what didn’t work – keep a positive attitude and continue doing what’s worked for you.

5. Set realistic goals for the New Year.

The last and most important tip to send you on the path to success in 2013 is to create realistic career goals. Think about where you’d like to be a year from now. What skills would you like to develop? Could you possibly benefit from a change of employer? Setting goals for yourself and consistently checking in on your progress throughout the year is a surefire way to keep you on the path to success!
