The most recent release (April 7, 2011) from the Canadian Labour Force shared some very interesting statistics and employment trends.
Here is a breakdown of some of the key findings:
- Overall employment was unchanged in March, 2011.
- Full-time employment saw a good gain.
In March 2011, full-time employment rose by 91,000. - Part-time employment fell.
The increase in full-time employment was offset by a decline in part-time of 92,000. - Unemployment decreased.
The unemployment rate was down 0.1 percentage points to 7.7%. - Employment continued to rise over the past year.
– Over the past 12 months, employment has risen by 1.8% (+305,000).
– Full-time employment is up 251,000, an increase of 1.8%.
– Part-time employment is up 54,000, an increase of 1.7%.
In what sectors is employment growing the quickest?
The release shows that there was employment growth in accommodation and food services, as well as construction in March. On the flip side, there were employment losses in health care and social assistance and in public administration.
Employment changes by province:
In March, Quebec saw a decline in employment while there was an increase in Prince Edward Island. There were no notable changes in overall employment in the other provinces.

- Employment rose +.4%
- Full-time employment +.6%
- Part-time employment –.6%
