8 Tips for Nailing Your Second Interview

Pinnacle All, Job Search Tips 1 Comment

If you just landed a second interview, take a moment to congratulate yourself. You certainly must have performed well during your first interview! But as one of Manitoba’s top employment agencies, we know that just like nailing that initial interview took plenty of prep time, so too will getting ready for the second. Here are some tips to help you succeed:

1. Review your past performance.

Think about how you did in the last interview. Were there areas you wished you’d expanded upon? Did you forget to ask an important question? Is there an accomplishment you didn’t highlight? Make a list of these topics and questions you want to cover. Also brainstorm new accomplishments and reasons why the employer should hire you so you have some fresh insight for the interviewers.

2. Dig deeper.

Try to find out exactly who will be at the interview and what you can expect. Once you know whom you will be interviewing with, try to find out as much as you can about each person. Also, if you know other employees who work for the company, reach out to them and try to get the scoop on the people you’re interviewing with.

3. Keep “fit” in mind.

Second interviews typically try to delve deeper into a candidate’s personality to determine whether they are a good fit for the company culture. So use your very best interpersonal skills. And remember, this interview is also an opportunity for you to evaluate fit with the company.

4. Go prepared.

Your second interview might actually be a daylong interview, when you meet with multiple decision makers, go out to lunch, and take a tour of the workplace. So be sure to clear your schedule for the entire day. Also bring plenty of copies of your resume to hand out if needed.

5. Get ready to ask and answer lots of questions.

Behavioral questions are commonly asked in second interviews, even if they weren’t asked during the first. So prepare to be asked questions like “Tell us about a time you had to make an unpopular decisions at work.” But don’t just prepare to be asked questions, also prepare some questions to ask. Keep in mind you’ll be expected to make more sophisticated inquiries than you did during your first interview.

6. Stay energized.

Don’t run out of steam toward the end of the day, just when you’re about to meet with the company president. Maintain a high level of enthusiasm and confidence throughout. So, if you need to, take a break between interviews to splash some water on your face or take a quick brisk walk if you have time

7. Prepare for salary negotiations.

Don’t get caught off guard if the hiring manager raises the subject of compensation. Be ready to negotiate. You may be asked about your willingness to travel or relocate, so also have answers ready for those kinds of questions, as well.

8. Get a good night’s sleep.

Whether you’re simply having an hour-long interview with the hiring manager, or a day full of interviews and skills testing, a good night sleep will do nothing but help.
