6 Ways to Lose a Big Promotion

Pinnacle All, Career Tips Leave a Comment

As one of Winnipeg’s leading recruitment agencies, we know that most employees want to get promoted. For you, it might be about craving more responsibility, an increase in pay, or simply because you think you deserve it.

However, your perception of your work and your boss’s perception of it may not align as well as you think. As a result, while you believe you’re a shoo-in for a promotion, you may not even be in the running at all. Here’s a look at why:

1. You’re a complainer.

Managers like to work with people who have a positive, “can do” attitude. They want someone they know will have the initiative to take on added responsibility, and the resilience to find solutions to problems…not simply point them out.

2. You don’t get your work done.

You’re easily distracted or spending too much time socializing with your co-workers. As a result, at the end of the day, you don’t always have your tasks completed.

3. You have problems with punctuality/attendance.

Being late on a regular basis is a big red flag to your manager that you’re not that committed to your job and that you don’t really respect company rules. Likewise, consistently calling in sick on the Friday before a long weekend is also a sign that you’re not ready for a promotion.

4. You don’t get along with your co-workers.

You don’t have to be best friends with all of your co-workers. However, having productive and mutually respectful relationships will go a long way in showcasing to your boss that you work well with others and could therefore possibly lead a team.

5. You don’t get along with your boss.

You may have a very good reason for not getting along with your boss. Unfortunately, though, having a negative relationship will likely impact your ability to get promoted.

6. You focus on the money.

If you tell your boss you’d like a promotion, and then follow it with “because I need more money,” your boss is going to automatically shut down your request. It’s presumed that part of the reason people want promotions is to get a boost in pay. However, by making that the focal point, you’re telling your boss that that’s all you care about.

The bottom line is that when you want to land a promotion, you really need to be mindful of your behavior, do your best everyday, and work to solve problems for your boss. You also need to follow the rules, like dressing appropriately and coming to work on time. When you demonstrate these kinds of behaviors, you’re telling your boss that you’re ready for more responsibility. So think of each day as an opportunity to prove yourself and your worth to the company.
