A resume is an ever-evolving project that you should revisit throughout your career – each time adding new skills and accomplishments that track your professional story.  If you’re getting ready to start a new job search, here are 5 tips to help you update your resume.

1. Tailor to the posting:

Customize your resume to suit the job you’re applying for by highlighting your relevant skills, experiences, and achievements. This shows that you’ve done your research and are genuinely interested in the position.

2. Use relevant keywords:

Incorporating keywords from the job posting increases the chance of your resume’s selection by an applicant tracking system or a hiring manager. Ensure you include all technologies/skills when possible.

3. Highlight your accomplishments:

Instead of just listing your duties and responsibilities, use specific examples to show how you’ve made a difference in your previous roles. This demonstrates your value as an employee and offers tangible evidence of your professional skills rather than generic content.

4. Utilize action verbs:

Start your bullet-pointed descriptions of responsibilities with verbs such as “managed,” “created,” and “led” to make your resume more dynamic and engaging. This puts what you did at the front of the sentence to capture attention.

5. Select a professional format:

Avoid using fancy fonts or graphics that can be difficult to read. Colour is acceptable, however black and white are the most professional.

By following these 5 tips to help you update your resume, it will be sure to stand out among the competition. If the application process also calls for the inclusion of a cover letter, click here for our top tips on how to write one that stands out and impress the hiring manager.
