3 Ways to Get Promoted in 2018

Pinnacle Career Tips Leave a Comment

So, you hope to get promoted in 2018. So do a lot of other people. Whether it is for the sake of making more money, having more influence, or becoming a better leader, everyone seeks a promotion for a different reason. Regardless of the reason, the path to promotion is the same for every individual. Not many get a shortcut.

If you want to finally get that promotion, you’ll need to step up your game at work in ways others won’t. You may already be an exemplary employee, but there is always room for improvement. Your boss will be impressed with your efforts to better yourself this year, and may respond by moving you up the corporate ladder.

How to Get Promoted in 2018

If “get a promotion” made it onto your list of New Year’s resolutions for 2018, vow to consistently do the following:

Be more courteous

Practicing common courtesy can make the difference between you getting passed over or chosen for a promotion. The blog article Want to Seriously Impress Your Manager? Be Courteous at Work! stated,

“When your manager occasionally encounters less-than-courteous workers, he or she takes notice of the considerate ones. In many cases, impressing one’s manager and standing out at work is as a simple as saying ‘please’ and ‘thank you’ and keeping the feelings of your coworkers in mind.”

Help your boss get recognized

Managers promote people who make them look good. With this in mind, make every effort to get your boss recognized for doing his or her job excellently. For example, if your manager has financial targets to hit each month, ask him or her how you can help.

Don’t be dramatic

If there is one thing managers hate, it is dealing with employee drama. Workers should not hesitate to report real issues, such as sexual harassment, to management. However, those who hope to be promoted should think twice before bringing complaints to those in management positions. A contributor to The Muse wrote,

“I don’t care if you don’t like the person you sit next to or think the the Post-It notes should be yellow, not blue. Bring me drama and I am certain that you are not worthy of the next step.”

Well said, and duly noted.

Get Yourself Noticed by Management This Year

Getting promoted in 2018 can be as easy as being more courteous, aiming to get your boss recognized by his or her managers, and keeping drama to yourself. Not only will these actions get you noticed by management, but they will probably also make you feel better about yourself as an employee.
