So you’ve just graduated and you’re chomping at the bit to find your first corporate job. This is probably one of the most exciting times of your life. A little advice can go a long way toward helping you find a great job with a company you can add value to and develop professionally with. Read on to find some ideas for landing the ideal post-grad job.

3 Ways to Get Hired by the Right Company After Graduation

Here are a few tips for snagging a corporate job after graduation that you’ll really enjoy:

1) Keep your expectations realistic — If there’s one thing that’s sure to keep you from finding a job you’ll love post-grad, it’s having unrealistic expectations. Expect to start out with an entry-level position, even if you have work experience from an internship with a similar company. Most recent graduates start at the bottom, but that doesn’t have to be a bad thing. If you see it for what it is — an opportunity to serve, watch, learn, and grow professionally — you’ll never resent your first corporate position.

2) Prepare for corporate employee life — The transition from student to corporate employee is significant. To navigate it successfully, you must prepare for it. “If you want a corporate job, you need to look (and act) the part,” wrote a contributor to BILLFOLD. “That means updating your wardrobe with income from your freelance gigs, getting a good haircut, and even participating in mock interviewing or other opportunities.” This would be a good time to connect with friends who already have a corporate position and can answer questions about what to expect from your first employer and how to adequately prepare for a post-grad job.

3) Don’t be too picky — Having standards for a workplace is wonderful. So is not settling for a job you don’t want. However, being too picky about your first corporate job after graduation could end up prolonging the time period in which you are unemployed. Remember, there is no perfect job. Every employer will have plenty of room for improvement. So while you should be ambitious in your job search, you shouldn’t let it keep you from accepting a job that’s not quite what you had in mind but could be a very good fit for you.

Grads Just Wanna Have Fun — Making the Most of Your First Corporate Job

It can be easy to get so focused on attaining that non-entry-level position you really want that you forget to enjoy the journey to it. As you are working hard at your first corporate job, be sure to have fun. There is room for both. Make friends and contacts, learn new skills, ask questions, and be forgiving of yourself as you develop professionally. This post-grad job will be your career launching pad, and that is something to celebrate.
