3 Recruiting Tips from Hockey Scouts

A successful recruiting plan is an essential component to the short- and long-term success of any organization. But how can you take your recruiting plan from so-so to stellar?

Learn from hockey!

There are certainly many lessons to be learned from hockey, and our own Winnipeg Jets. But when it comes to your recruiting plan, you can learn quite a bit from hockey scouts. These key fundamentals can help you take your recruiting to the next level:

1. Think about the future. Scouts are looking at talent who can fill holes and get the team ahead in the future. What does this mean for your business? Don’t dismiss employees whose resumes aren’t an exact match for your job posting. Just because a candidate doesn’t fit into a perfect mold for your current opening, doesn’t mean that the employee won’t be a major star for your business down the road.

2. Look for “hidden” talent. Hockey scouts aren’t just looking at the fundamentals of young players. They’re looking for “hidden” skills that can help elevate their team. For your recruiting, this means you should take the time and energy to look beyond the resume and standard interview questions. Is there seemingly non-relevant experience in another industry that could pose a “hidden” benefit to your organization? Look beyond the immediate exterior for skills that transcend the resume and can help your organization achieve more.

3. Listen to candidates. Sometimes, interviewers are so intent on asking the questions on their list that they forget to listen to candidates. Often times, candidates will tell you much more than the answer to a question – if you let them talk. Give plenty of opportunity for your candidates to talk about themselves, their  goals, and how they see themselves within your organization. Just as scouts have keen listening and observation skills to help them identify key traits in players, your recruiting can benefit greatly from enhanced listening skills.
