How to Strike a Work-Life Balance That’s Perfect for You

Work-life balance is a hot topic these days. From the professional arena to the media, the concept of work-life balance is widely discussed, and for good reason. People are wising up to the fact that an unhealthy devotion to work is making them cranky at best and sick at worst. In extreme cases, overworking can even lead to family breakdown. Work-life balance is supposed to be the remedy to all this. Sadly, though, it seems to evade most people.

Why Do People Lack Work-Life Balance?

Today, more and more individuals are taking their work home with them. Even when they are physically at home, their minds are still very much at the office. But the question is, “Why?” Why the need for a non-stop work life? Psychologist Robert Brooks, PhD, co-author of The Power of Resilience: Achieving Balance, Confidence, and Personal Strength in Your Life, says, “A lot of people are having a more difficult time finding balance in their lives because there have been cutbacks or layoffs where they work. They’re afraid it may happen to them, so they’re putting in more hours.” Sound familiar?

A lack of balance in one’s life is dangerous no matter what the reasoning for it is. Being on high alert at all times increases stress, which set the stage for disease. Something’s got to give for those who feel they are never quite done working.

Tips for Finding a Work-Life Balance That’s Perfect for You

One of the main reasons people lack work-life balance is because they don’t understand that it should look different from person to person. This is one concept that is not one-size-fits-all. Those who use a cookie-cutter formula to create balance in their lives will inevitably fail. The amazing news is that you (yes, you) can have a balanced life. Here are a few tips to help you get on the right track:

1) Ditch one work responsibility – Sometimes clearing even one small responsibility off your plate at work can free up a lot of time. That said, is there a work responsibility that is killing your soul and eating up your free time? If so, ask your manager if there is any way you can be relieved of it. There may be another employee who has more time and would welcome the assignment.

2) Work outOne of the best ways to bring balance to your life is to make regular exercise part of your routine. If you are sedentary, start by working out once or twice a week. “Working out” is inclusive of both intense and non-strenuous forms of physical activity, so don’t underestimate the power of a simple walk. As always, consult your physician before starting a new workout regime.

3) Pursue counseling – If you just can’t seem to get a sense of balance in your life, there is absolutely nothing wrong with pursuing counseling. A professional counselor can help you pinpoint the emotional reasons for overworking and help you make room for more family/personal time.

Striking a balance between work life and personal life is not an easy feat, but it is possible. What are your work-life balance secrets?
